Orientation Visit Background
To meet growing demand for electric power, Vietnam's Economic Development Strategy and National Power Development Master Plan calls for the construction of multiple nuclear power plant sites amounting to up to 11,000MW of power generation capacity, with construction beginning on the first site in 2010. Vietnam is actively working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to comply with the agency's Milestone Development Program, which provides that Vietnam would address specific legal, security and regulatory frameworks before pursuing project construction. USTDA will sponsor an Orientation Visit for Vietnamese officials responsible for the development of their country's civil nuclear power sector. The 12-day visit will bring delegates from the Vietnamese government and industry to the United States to study best practices in the design, construction, operations and regulation of the civilian nuclear energy industry. The key objectives of this visit are to highlight U.S. technology services and operational best practices related to this sector, as well as to increase the level of collaboration between the U.S. government and Vietnam.
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) advances economic development and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle income countries. The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, early investment analysis, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment.
USTDA's strategic use of foreign assistance funds to support sound investment policy and decision-making in host countries creates an enabling environment for trade, investment and sustainable economic development. Operating at the nexus of foreign policy and commerce, USTDA is uniquely positioned to work with U.S. firms and host countries in achieving the agency's trade and development goals. In carrying out its mission, USTDA gives emphasis to economic sectors that may benefit from U.S. exports of goods and services.
